Does anybody have a good durable system for exterior fiberglass doors. I have a good customer that had a new fiberglass door installed 2 years ago and the installer put a stain and clear coat on it. The clear coat is peeling off in sheets. I have never had much success with exterior clear coats. This is a southern exposure door behind a full view storm door. It gets HOT! My SW rep suggested a marine spar varnish and recommended cutting the first coat 70% and the second coat 30% then the third coat full strength. Obviously the old finish will need to be removed, any other tried and true methods? I was thinking a latex poly might be more durable. I told him with the exposure and the heat, it won't last as long as a "paint job" would. Thanks folks!

There is a finish kit sold separately with the doors which consists of a gel stain and a water borne clear coat. the product is sold under the name therma-tru and is warrantied for five years. we use this system frequently and have not had any problems. It takes a bit of artistry to apply the stain to make it look right so you'll need some talent for the staining operation. Therma-tru Corp. 601 RE Jones Rd. Butler, Indiana 46721. This product was developed specifically for fiberglass doors and can be ordered through the door retailer, it comes in a whole kit with everything you need (use your own brush though, as you will see) it runs about $75 bucks in California. good luck,Brad
