L.E. Travis, Jr. PDCA Craftsman of the Year Award

The L.E. Travis, Jr. PDCA Craftsman of the Year Award recognizes the finest painting and decorating craftsmen, based on nominations by PDCA member contractor-owners.

PDCA honors up to six (6) individuals each year who demonstrate through their work the highest standards of painting and decorating craftsmanship. Although the terms "Craftsman" and "Craftsmanship" appear to be gender specific, there is no intention whatsoever for that to be the case. To the contrary, these PDCA awards are designed to recognize the most highly skilled painters in the "world," irrespective of gender, age, national origin, or any other qualification aside from those set forth.

The selection of the terms "Craftsman" and "Craftsmanship" were selected based exclusively on the thoroughly ingrained nature of the terms and their globally recognized meaning and connotation.

2009 Winner

Steve Scanlan

Steve Scanlan
Painting in Partnership, Inc. Employee

Steve is the epitome of a true Craftsman. He has a true love for painting and he is passionate about the impact painting can have on people’s lives by protecting surfaces and creating beauty.

Steve has a thirst to learn everything he can about painting. He uses any means available: web, colleagues, other painters, articles, experimentation and manufacturers.   Steve is always willing to share his knowledge with others, including customers, colleagues and his industry.

Steve has been a leader at Painting in Partnership through the strength of his standards for craftsmanship, professionalism and ethics. He has been an inspiration to his colleagues and a source of new learning for them.

“Practice makes perfect" is a principle he well understands. Before undertaking a new finish or technique, he always experiments beforehand to debug the process or understand it better, often on his own time. That quality has enabled the owner to step back from decorative finishing and turn this function over to Steve.

Steve earned a BA in Rhetoric from the University of Illinois. He also took a number of Chemistry and Organic Chemistry classes at Harper College as part of the requirements for Pre-Med. He later decided not to pursue the medical field.

Steve started painting part-time twenty years ago, for several years, while he was in school. At the age of twenty eight, he started painting full-time. For the first 4 years, he had his own painting company. He then joined a decorative finishing company where he began learning about this new aspect of painting. In May of 2001, he left that company to join Painting in Partnership as a painter. He has continued to grow and develop as an all-around Craftsman. He has gone through a rigorous in-house training, as well as outside training in Decorative Finishing.

The family name of “Fattori” means “the maker or doer.” John does make things happen. Whatever name you call him, John has truly been an asset to our industry.

The Sabelhaus West Painting’s Team has provided Steve Bentley the opportunity to bring Financial Aid into small African villages where if you own a radio you are among the higher economic positions in the community. The original introduction into Uganda was with the Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island and their clean water initiative.  They have complemented their work by providing financial assistance on smaller independent projects ranging from several thousands of dollars to sponsoring a Women’s goat farm project for $500.

With out the support and willingness for everyone within the Company to pick up the slack during Steve’s absence this would not be possible.  He is truly just an extension of the whole team getting the great opportunity to see the impact their gifts of time and money have contributed to the changing of people’s lives.

Some of the projects that Sabelhaus has been involved in include:

  • Beds for St Mary Kevin Orphanage

Hal Hargrave Jr.

Hal Hargrave Jr.
The Hargrave Family

Apex Painting Co
On July 27, 2007 Hal Hargrave Jr’s life changed in an instant. Hal is the grandson of long time PDCA member Randy Hargrave and the son of Hal Hargrave, Sr. of Apex Painting.
He was on the way to Las Vegas to deliver supplies when he swerved right to avoid a piece of tire tread, over corrected and veered left. When he hit the center divider, his truck rolled four times.  The cab collapsed on his head and left him with a broken neck, broken shoulder bone, a fractured vertebrae and seriously damaged his spinal cord. It left him paralyzed from the neck down. The doctors gave him a 1 to 3 percent chance of walking again.

Due to the motivation, determination, courage and rehabilitation five days a week Hal has regained full motion in his arms and again has feeling in his legs.

The Hargrave family started a foundation to assist others with spinal injuries in covering the financial burden of treatment. The foundation is called the “Be Perfect” Foundation and has already helped several victims of spinal cord injuries in its first month. It bought portable ramps for a home for a patient and paid the co-pay for a wheelchair for another patient so they could leave the hospital and go home, the foundation has already raised about $50,000.

2009 Richard Liddeke Distinguished Service Award Winner

David Siegner

David Siegner

Dave’s early years as an apprentice, journeyman painter, superintendent, and estimator prepared him for the challenge of launching his own paint contracting business.  From a very modest beginning, Dave and his wife Maureen created their painting company based on the principles of honesty, integrity, and customer value.  Today, Siegner and Company is one of the largest painting contractors in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Before entering the painting trade, Dave attended the Columbia School of Broadcasting, with visions of becoming a radio disc jockey; he saw that there were more employment opportunities available to him through the painter’s Apprenticeship program.  Dave went to work as an apprentice painter, for Albert Dierickx Co in 1972.  By 1979, Dave became a journeyman painter and then a foreman.  In 1979, Dave went to work for Willamette Painting Co. as Superintendent and Operations Manager until 1988.  By 1991, the decision was made to open his own painting company.  Thus, Siegner and Company was born.

Dave and Maureen’s daughter, Meghan joined the company as office manager in 1996. After graduating from University of Oregon in 2000, their son Ian also joined the company.  Meghan and Ian begin to assume ownership and management of this dynamic company. John Sullivan, who has been with the company since near its beginning, recently became Dave’s son-in-law after marrying Meghan this past summer

Dave is relentless when it comes to education. He has spent significant time educating himself in every aspect of the painting business.  After having spent his entire career in the painting industry, Dave feels that it is his responsibility to give back to the industry by sharing the knowledge that he has gained in an effort to advance the painting trade.

Between 1997 and 2002, he served in every Portland Chapter chair. Dave has also held all officer positions in the Oregon Council.  Since 2000, Dave has served on numerous national committees. Dave began serving on the National Executive Board in 2003 and held each office, becoming PDCA’s National President in Dallas, Texas in 2007.   Dave has won Contractor of the Year three times from the Portland Chapter and once from the Oregon Council.  Siegner and Company has also won both the PDCA Gold and Silver Safety Awards.  Dave is also active in a number of other trade associations, including the Signatory Painting Contractors Organization, Associated General Contractors, and the Portland Finishing Trades Group.

Dave and Maureen have been married for nearly forty years, and they both still work in the painting business that they started 18 years ago.  Their grandchildren, Kelsea, Alex, Kellen-and soon-to-be-here Brayden, bring Dave and Maureen joy and entertainment, as do their ‘adopted fur-kids’.

2009 Al Quilici Outstanding Member Award Winner

Brandt Domas

Brandt Domas

Brandt owned and operated Domas Fine Painting & Restoration - a small upper-end residential and commercial painting and decorating firm located in Denver, CO.  Domas also contracted commercial historic preservation and commercial decorative painting projects which were important niche portions of the business.  “Active involvement in PDCA has been instrumental to the growth and success I had with my painting business”, says Domas.

Brandt served in leadership positions at the chapter, council and national levels of PDCA and represented the Rocky Mountain Council on the National Board of Directors when he was elected to a position on the PDCA Executve Committee.  Over the years he has served on many national committees including PDCA Standards, Residential and Commercial Certification, Strategic Planning, Membership, Marketing and he participated in the delivery of all of the PDCA’s Leadership Institutes, 1995 through 2000.

Brandt was involved with both local and national PDCA as one of  the "eligible bachelors" before meeting Maggie.  As their relationship became more serious, introducing her to the PDCA family was as important as meeting the "blood" relatives.  Members of the Denver Chapter, the Rocky Mountain Council and National PDCA gave Maggie the scoop on Brandt and gave Brandt the thumbs up on Maggie.

Brandt and Maggie have been married for 19 years and have 2 wonderful sons, George and Charlie.  Both boys have worked for the painting business and George is still working for Brandt now in a part time basis with Work-Systems, Brandt’s PR and Media business.  The boys have grown up in  PDCA.  Charlie was along on a national committee meeting to San Francisco when he was 6 weeks old.  They played with Mickey at the national convention in Anaheim when they were little, sailed on a pirate ship off Cancun with the Carolina's council, and  were treated to a beautiful bird's eye view suite in Honolulu during the year Brandt served as PDCA President.  They had fun with other PDCA family kids including; the Mann's, the Liddeke's, and the Hampton's. Serving PDCA required and provided travel to so many places that we never would have visited from Semiahmoo, Washington to Ft. Meyers, Florida and Newport, Rhode Island to San Antonio, Texas, says Maggie.  PDCA has played a large part in the life of the family.  Watching and supporting Brandt as a member and later a leader in PDCA has been a sacrifice at times, but even more so a gift.  Witnessing Brandt's involvement and commitment to PDCA, shows first hand that you get back so very much more than you give.
